IPv4 / IPv6 Inter-AS Topology Congruence
For various reasons, such as the ASPA AFI arguments in the ISTF sidrops Working Group, one wonders how congruent the IPv6 inter-AS topology is with that of IPv4.
A First/Cheap Estimate
For a first rough estimate, maybe look at RIS/RouteViews RIB dumps from a few instances, decompose the AS Paths into inter-AS links, and compare the sets.
- For each (significant?) RIS/RV collector
- For each peer. AKA Vantage Point
- Mark it as Full or Partial by prefix count
- Filter to ignore prefixes longer than /24 or /48
- Go down each AS Path and Collect all AS Adjacency Pairs, v4 and v6
- Ignore pairs with the same AS (prepending)
- For each peer. AKA Vantage Point
How many Adjacency Pairs are only in v4, only in v6, in both?
Does the congruence differ significantly by major georgaphic region: Africa, ALyC, Asia, US/Eur?
Do full and partial feeds differ significantly?
And
Can we characterize the error types and bounds?
Why has no one done this before?
Is there a deeper, less clue core, approach? Data Plane, a la Atlas Probing, would seem to lack edgier vantage points.
