Set Up a Used Dell Server

iDRAC Config

  • you need VGA and keyboard (my HDMI/VGA adapter needs USB Power!!)
  • boot and f2 to set up idrac to use network in some way
  • default user and pass is back of service tag or is root / calvin or set in f2 setup

If Problem with iDRAC Web Access

Go in SOL with ssh

netsrv.iad.rg.net:/home/randy> ssh root@ipmi.r1.iad.rg.net
root@ipmi.r1.iad.rg.net's password:
/admin1-> racadm set idrac.webserver.HostHeaderCheck 0

Enable HTML KVM Console

In iDRAC Server / VirtualConsole, set Plug-in Type to HTML5

I also set Default Action upon session sharing rewuest to Full Access

Be Sure Virtual Console Setup has Kbd Enabled!

Make the Drives JBOD

In iDRAC / Stortage / Physical Disks / Setup set drives to Convert to Non-RAID.

Be Sure CPU Virtualisation is ON!!!

You can see it in the iDRAC under Hardware/CPU. But to change it you have to be in BIOS Setup.

Set UEFI Boot

This has to be done in the f2 BIOS. I could not see how to do this in the iDRAC.

Update iDRAC Firmware

Go to Dell web site / Support, and enter the Service Tag. Update at least the iDRAC and BIOS firmware.

  • Update iDRAC before BIOS to provent getting verification errors on BIOS install
  • UnZip the Exe in a Directory
  • Inside payload directory is the protein
  • Install using iDRAC / iDRAC Settings / Update and Rolback

Update BIOS
