Converting a FreeBSD 10.3 Port System from Source-based to Binary
The major clue was to be found in this web site.
List all the currently installed ports
portmaster --list-origins > installed-port-list
Clean old dist files
portmaster -ty --clean-distfiles
Delete the current ports and clean up a bunch of /usr/local cruft
pkg delete -afy
cd /usr/local <and clean up dir by dir>
Put the pkg package back. Yes this is weird. And you always need emacs.
pkg install pkg
pkg install emacs-nox
Get the directory names off the front of the port names
sed 's;^.*/;;' installed-port-list > list
Edit the list to fix some strange mess with python tool names
<change all py-* to py27-*>
Install binaries for all ports
cat list | xargs pkg install -y
ssh was a little sick, so do this before you log out. And test it!
service sshd restart
So that one does not mistakenly run portmaster
pkg remove portmaster
And Bob's your uncle.
